If you can not measure it, you can not improve it. \u2013 Lord Kelvin<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any other assessment, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nextagile.ai\/agile-consulting-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agility maturity assessment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also happens at every state of agile implementation &amp; that too frequently. We have used Agile Maturity Assessment in measuring the state of agile implementation at many levels \u2013 individual, team, group of teams in a program\/portfolio and also at an organization level. And it is tweaked based on relevance. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common implementation happens at team level. And this is how we do it for a team which is using <a href=\"https:\/\/nextagile.ai\/blogs\/agile\/kanban-vs-scrum\/\">scrum<\/a> approach \u2013<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine, you are coaching a team for quite some time and now you want to know how healthy they are. Usually, we recommend quarterly rhythm to conduct such assessments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you need to have in place to conduct Agile maturity assessment? At a high level, below are the steps :<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Agility Health Survey<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blocking stakeholder calendar &amp; Sharing expectations<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collecting insights via a survey tool<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collating insights<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Present findings and creating a growth plan with recommendations<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s discuss these steps in more detail.<\/span> <b>Agile Maturity survey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 this first step is to design an Agile Maturity survey which is relevant to your teams and project environment. Below is a basic step wise process which has worked for us.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Identify the focus areas that you want to assess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like \u2013 Clarity of roles &amp; events, Leadership support, continuous improvement, culture, adaptability \u2013 anything that in your environment you want to improve by implementing agile ways of working<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Survey statements against each focus area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Think of 10-15 easy to understand yet insightful statements against each focus area. Statements should capture the essence of the focus area, check below examples for \u2018Culture\u2019 as a focus area.<\/span><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We think as ONE team and not silos<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We understand that change even in later part of development is acceptable<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our team, everybody pulls their work since we do not assign the work<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Ensure that you include open ended subjective questions for each focus area<\/b><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Identify the scale of response that participants will give, for example :<\/b><b><\/b><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rating \u2013 1 to 5 where 1 is Not happening &amp; 5 is exceeding expectations<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moods \u2013 Sad, Mad, Glad<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual imagination \u2013 Pre-crawl, Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything that makes sense to you &amp; it will be easier for participants.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Populate the survey tool. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conducting the assessment online is easier these days and there are tools which can help you with metric views on the data you have collected which will simplify the analysis.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that the survey pages are organized neatly. We prefer one page for one focus area &amp; the statements it contains.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few tools we have used \u2013 Google forms, SurveyGizmo, SurveyMonkey, LimeSurvey<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>Blocking stakeholder calendar &amp; Sharing expectations \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to set the context and purpose of the assessment with all the stakeholders to get their buy-in and ensure the effectiveness of the entire process. You will need to do the following :<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Book the appointments \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Book two appointments with your target team:<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First appointment, of 3 hours\/team where you as a facilitator of assessment will <\/span><b>conduct the assessment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and collect the inputs from all the participants<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second appointment, of 2 hours where you will present the findings of the assessment post-analysis and help the team in <\/span><b>preparing the growth plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Whom should you invite?<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entire scrum team \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/nextagile.ai\/blogs\/agile\/what-should-a-product-owner-not-do\/\">Product Owner<\/a>, Development Team\/Developers, Scrum Master<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team\u2019s reporting manager\/s (selective participation)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Client stakeholders\/sponsors (selective participation)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives of supporting team (selective participation)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/\/ Selective participation implies, these participants will be having a separate survey to fill which is focused to their role<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><b>Reconfirm participation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ensure that all the participants MUST show up.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><b>Collect the Insights via a Survey Tool<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain the focus areas &amp; create comfort<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure the participants understand the importance of the survey and their responses will be anonymous<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share the links with Scrum Team members<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share the separate focused links with other participant groups \u2013 client stakeholders, sponsors, reporting managers, supporting team members &amp; others. Since they may get done sooner hence they may leave.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kickstart the assessment<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nextagile.ai\/blogs\/agile\/how-to-make-a-timeboxed-event-more-effective\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timebox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each \u2018Focus Area\u2019 page. Nearly 5-15 min could be needed by participants to respond.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarify doubts on statements \u2013 right understanding is paramount<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuity is key.. Incase taking breaks then pls don\u2019t keep it more than 2 min otherwise it is tough to get the hold of participants<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclude,<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure all participants have submitted and tally the count of submissions with your survey dashboard<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind all to participate in the next appointment to look at the survey report and prepare growth plan<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><b>Collating Insights<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all tools provide facility to download the responses in your preferred format<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We prefer to collate following information:<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong points <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 choose top 5-8<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak points <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 choose top 5-8<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top Agreements &amp; Disagreements <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 choose top 5-8<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collate Subjective answers<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Radar chart to show the average scores against each focus area<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure to reword or remove any profanity used ????<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><b>Present findings and create a growth plan with recommendations<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All who have participated in responding to assessments are expected to participate in this event also in its entirety<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First part, present<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Present the findings that you have prepared<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversations will be triggered, let it flow<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let it all sink in\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request people to make notes of their key observations for the later part<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second part, growth plan creation<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect. Probe people about the key improvements that they want to bring it and use some tool to collect all such pointers<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss. Show them the improvements that they have shared and try to merge those which are similar. Let\u2019s say we have consolidated them in a list called \u201cGROWTH\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vote.
